Abstract

The Grix waste disposal site (Offenbach/Main) is situated within a disused quarry where tertiary limestone has been mined. The refuse volume totals some 2.6 million cubic metres and represents a potential hazard for the Mülheim drinking water supply and mineral/medicinial springs in Offenbach as well. An east-west running subvertical fault zone in a downstream position acts as a hydrogeological barrier such dividing the aquifer into two distinct hydrogeological units. The contaminant trail in the ground water is not affected by the fault zone. The ecologically attractive and cost-saving rehabilitation concept comprises the partial encapsulation with a vertical sealing wall resulting in the preservation of the disposal site as some sort of "natural bioreactor".
