Abstract

The joint symposium of the I. G. U. Commission on the Evolution of Slopes and of the I. G. U. Commission on Applied Geomorphology including the Subcommission on Geomorphological Mapping and the Subcommission on Fluvial Dynamics was held at Liège and Leuven during the period 8 to 16 June, 1966. This symposium was organized by Professor P. Macar, Director of the Geological-Geographical Institute of Université de Liège, Chairman of the Commission on the Evolution of Slopes, and Professor F. B. Gullentops, Université de Louvain, with the liberal aid of Université de Liège, UNESCO, and with the contribution of Koninklijke Vlaamse Academie van Belgie, Centre National Beige de Recherches Géomorphologiques, and Ministère Belge de l’Education National et de la Culture. The symposium’s purpose was to bring together the viewpoints of members of the two I. G. U. commissions, and to unify the research techniques. Its programme included a variety of problems, i. e. the development of slopes and their cartographic representation, research methods of active slope-processes, unification of the key to the detailed geomorphological maps, and fluvial dynamics. 20 countries had delegates attending the symposium: Austria 1, Belgium 32, Canada 1, Congo 1, Czechoslovakia 2, Democratic Republic of Germany 3, Federal Republic of Germany 5, France 5, Great Britain 2, Holland 3, Hungary 1, Israel 1, Italy 1, Nigeria 1, Poland 10, Rumania 2, Sweden 2, Tunisia 1, U. S. A. 3, U. S. S. R. 1.
