Abstract

In 1960 Johnsson introduced for the first time (in this journal) the idea that in the Zaragoza region periglacial conditions must have occurred, represented by ice wedges and congeliturbate-like structures. He found these phenomena on “terraces” at a height of about 200 m above sealevel (Johnsson 1960, p. 75). Recently Brosche (1971 b, p. 110, also in this journal) published his observations and concluded that similar features could also be found on lower lying terraces, i. e. 190 m above sealevel. According to the present author more critical observations must be made, i. e. the terrace development has to be seen in its relation to the underlying gypsum, the calcium-carbonate content of the terrace gravels, the glacis which exists on the terrace developed in the Pleistocene, and the deforestation, accelerated erosion and deposition of weathered and other loose material in historical times.
