The use of the term "pediment" and related terminology

Abstract
The term pediment has been used to describe a wide variety of landforms in many climatic environments. The adoption of partial and weakly constrained definitions has tended to obscure the unique attributes of this landform. A pediment is defined here as a terrestrial erosional footslope surface inclined at a low angle and lacking significant relief in all three dimensions. It usually meets the hillslope at an angular nickline, and may be covered by transported material. The definition must be applied in a manner which permits some limited differences in the form of transverse and longitudinal profiles, and of the nick, and also a limited degree of linear erosion: such differences are of degree rather than of kind. Related terminology in English, French and German is discussed.
Kurzfassung
Der Terminus Pediment ist für ein breites Spektrum von Landformen in verschiedenen Klimaten verwendet worden. Der Gebrauch von nur teilweise und wenig genau festgelegten Definitionen führte zur Verdunklung der einzigartigen Eigenschaften dieser Landformen. Ein Pediment ist hier definiert als eine terrestrische Abtragungs-Fußhangfläche, die mit flachem Winkel geneigt ist und die in allen drei Dimensionen größerer Reliefunterschiede ermangelt. Gewöhnlich grenzt ein Pediment an den Berghang mit einer scharfen, einspringenden Knicklinie. Es kann mit Geröllmaterial bedeckt sein. Die Definition soll in der Weise angewendet werden, daß einige geringe Unterschiede vom Querprofil, Längenprofil und Knick möglich sind und auch Linearerosion bis zu einem beschränkten Grade erlaubt ist: solche Unterschiede sind eine Frage des Grades und nicht der Art. Die verwandte Terminologie wird auf englisch, französisch und deutsch diskutiert.
Résumé
L’expression pediment a été employée à décrire une grande diversité de formes en divers environnements climatiques. L’adoption des définitions partielles et des définitions contenues faiblement a été susceptible d’obscurcir les attributs uniques de cette forme. Un pediment est défini ici comme une surface d’érosion continentale au piémont en pente plus faible qui manque relief significatif en toutes trois dimensions. Ordinairement le pediment aboutit à la colline avec une ligne d’angle basal, et peut être couvert avec matérial détritique. La définition doit être appliquée d’un manière que permettait quelques differences limitées en forme du profil transversal, du profil longitudinal, et de l’angle basal, et aussi permetra un degré limité d’érosion linéaire: differences de telles sortes sont plutôt de degré que de genre. La terminologie correspondante en anglais, français et allemand sera discuté ici.
