Is the pediplanation cycle a useful model? Evaluation in the Orange Free State (and elsewhere)in South Africa

Abstract
The morphology of South Africa and particularly the Orange Free State has been explained by the cyclic pediplanation model of L. C. King. In this article it will be demonstrated that the morphology can be described by deductive logic from material properties, process and time. It will also be shown that a succession of forms (“youth” to “old age”) is an unrealistic explanation and at most only fits the facts of morphology because of the coincidence of structure and process. In the explanation of the morphology of the Orange Free State the pediplanation cycle probably obscures more than it elucidates and should be discarded.
Kurzfassung
Die Morphologie in Südafrika und besonders des Orange Free State wurde durch das Modell der zyklischen Pediplanation von L. C. King erklärt. In diesem Artikel wird gezeigt, daß die Morphologie durch deduktive Schlüsse aus Gesteinseigenschaften, Prozessen und Zeit beschrieben werden kann. Ferner wird gezeigt, daß eine Sukzession der Formen (jung bis alt) eine unrealistische Erklärung ist und bestenfalls auf die vorgefundenen Formen paßt, weil Struktur und Prozeß zusammenfallen. In der Erklärung der Formen des Orange Free State verschleiert der Pediplanationszyklus wahrscheinlich mehr, als daß er erhellt, und sollte daher aufgegeben werden.
Résumé
La morphologie d’Afrique du Sud et en particulier de l’Etat libre d’Orange a été expliquée par le modèle de pédiplanation de L. C. King. Dans cet article, il sera démontré que la morphologie peut être décrite par logique déductive sur la base de propriétés des matériaux, de processus et du temps. Il sera aussi montré que la distinction d’une succession de formes (jeunes à anciennes) débouche sur une explication non réaliste de la morphologie. Dans l’explication de la morphologie de l’Etat libre d’Orange, le cycle de pédiplanation obscurcit plus qu’il n’élucide, et devrait être abandonné.
