Aus Anlaß der Ereignisse im Kosovo hat sich die Bundesanstalt für Geowissenschaften und Rohstoffe mit der Situation der Rohstoffwirtschaft in der Balkanregion auseinandergesetzt. In die betrachtete Region gehen die BR Jugoslawien (Serbien-Montenegro) und ihre Nachbarstaaten Rumänien und Bulgarien im Osten, Mazedonien und Albanien im Süden sowie Bosnien-Herzegowina und Kroatien im Westen ein.

Gegenstand der Betrachtungen sind die Gewinnung und Verarbeitung von Energierohstoffen sowie metallischen und nichtmetallischen mineralischen Rohstoffen. Es wurden Angaben zur Bergbauindustrie, zur erdölverarbeitenden Industrie, zur Eisen- und Stahlindustrie, zur NE-Metallurgie und zur Zementindustrie zusammengestellt.

In view of the recent events in Kosovo, the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources have been studying the state of the minerals industry in the Balkans. The countries in this region are the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (Serbia and Montenegro) and its neighbours Romania and Bulgaria in the east, Macedonia and Albania in the south, and Bosnia-Herzegovina and Croatia in the west. The study presents fundamental data on the production and processing of energy resources and metallic and non-metallic mineral resources. Information has been compiled on the mining, oil refining, iron and steel, non-ferrous metal and cement industries in each of the countries with respect to mineral resources potential, mineral deposits, mining districts and mines, capacities and production figures of the mining and quarrying companies, mineral processing, smelting and refining industries, the companies in the mineral industry and their situation, foreign investments, current state of legislation and privatization.
