Abstract
Cymbella distinguenda Hustedt is a rare endemic species of the ancient Lake Matano, Sulawesi, Indonesia. Krammer transferred this species in 2003 to the genus Cymbopleura without any additional observations. We encountered this species for the second time since its description from the type locality and studied its valve morphology in detail using both LM and SEM. Cymbella distinguenda is only slightly asymmetrical to the apical axis; the raphe is distinctly undulate with external distal raphe ends deflected dorsally and external proximal ends deflected ventrally. A small round or elongate stigma is evident on the ventral side of the axial area and striae are composed of double rows of small round and unoccluded areolae; at the poles there are apical pore fields that are not clearly differentiated from the areolae. The valve face is separated from the mantle by a marginal ridge and the whole valve (except the striae) can be covered with an extra silica layer and numerous silica granules between areolae and along the marginal ridge. Cymbella distinguenda shares features of the three genera, Cymbella, Cymbopleura and Oricymba, but it cannot be placed into any of them with certainty. Therefore, to accommodate this extraordinary taxon we propose to establish a new genus, Celebesia.
