Abstract
The aim of the monograph of the Umbelliferae of France was to take stock of the knowledge of all the species (indigenous or naturalized) extant in that country. It required a pluridisciplinary approach which led to a long-term study resulting in a five-volume work. This long work allows for comparisons of genera within the family and may lead to a better understanding of their relationships. The following fields are covered: life-cycle of plants, reproductive biology, biological functions of organs, reproductive strategies, ecotypes, biogeography (Atlantic speciation), phytochemistry and chemotypes, taxonomy and complexity, and evolution.
