The Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) of Germany funded a comprehensive stocktaking and evaluation of North Sea research which could serve as a reference for future research. The project "Synthesis and New Concept for North Sea Research (SYCON)" has taken up this task based on a broad synthesis of the present state of knowledge about North Sea research.

Part 1 of the "North Sea 2000" edition of the journal Senckenbergiana maritima provides four extensive reviews on North Sea phytoplankton, zooplankton, benthos as well as fish and higher trophic levels, which result from the SYCON project and present the state of the art in the different disciplines at the end of the 20th century.

Im Rahmen des Projektes Synthese und Neukonzeption von Nordseeforschung (SYKON)" finanzierte das deutsche Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF) eine umfangreiche Bestandsaufnahme und Evaluierung der bisherigen Nordseeforschung, die als Grundlage für zukünftige Forschungsinitiativen dienen soll.

Teil 1 der North Sea 2000" Edition der Zeitschrift Senckenbergiana maritima beinhaltet vier umfangreiche Zusammenfassungen über den aktuellen Stand der Nordseeforschung in den Disziplinen Phytoplankton, Zooplankton, Benthos und Fische einschließlich höherer Organismen. Diese Arbeiten resultieren aus dem SYKON-Projekt und bilden ein Nachschlagewerk zum Stand der Nordsee-Forschung am Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts.
