Ce volume contient quinze articles consacrés à divers aspects de l'étude
du sondage Refrath 1. Ce sondage, implanté dans le synclinal de Paffrath,
se localise dans la partie nord-ouest du Massif schisteux rhénan, à quelques
kilomètres de la ville de Cologne. Après une description sédimentologique
des 53 m du sondage, consistant essentiellement en mudstones et siltites partiellement carbonatés du sommet du Famennien, les auteurs envisagten l'interprétation sédimentologique (il s'agit de turbidites), la minéralogie
des argiles, la géochimie organique et la description des restes fossiles.
La richesse en faune et flore est en effet remarquable et justifie ce travail.
On passe en revue successivement les palynomorphes, les plantes, les
hétérocoralliaires, les brachiopodes, les mollusques, les ostracodes, les
échinodermes, les conodontes et les poissons. Chacun de ces groupes est
richement illustré, faisant de cet ouvrage un bel exemple d'exploitation
multidiscipliaire d'un sondage.
