Volume B 96 and B 97 (this volume) of the Geologisches Jahrbuch contain the results of the GeoMaud expedition compiled by scientists from BGR (Hannover, Berlin), German universities (Aachen, Bremen, Dresden, Freiburg), the Alfred-Wegener-Institute for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) (Bremen, Potsdam), the Federal Office for Cartography and Geodesy (formerly IfAG), and scientists from foreign institutes in Italy and Russia. In volume B 96, the main topics are the orthogneisses and the Pan-African granitoids and charnockites, in addition to studies on the regional metamorphism and the structural evolution of central DML. Volume B 97 presents the results of the aeromagnetic, paleomagnetic, photogrammetric, gravity, and airborne and ground-based radio echo sounding surveys.

The Earth's crust in central Dronning Maud Land is composed of late Mesoproterozoic metavolcanic and metasedimentary rock sequences which experienced Grenville deformation and metamorphism. Coevally, metaplutonic rocks formed to an unknown extent. These late Mesoproterozoic rocks were pervasively reactivated during the Pan-African events, almost completely obliterating the Grenville structures. Additionally, during the Pan-African events (600?500 Ma) the metamorphic crust in central Dronning Maud Land was intruded by a huge amount of igneous rock as discordant plutons ranging in composition from anorthosite to granite/syenite, some of which may now be metaplutonic rocks.

The results presented in the two volumes fill gaps in the knowledge of the geological structure and history of Dronning Maud Land and are thus of interest to the Antarctic research community.
