Product safety – Safety of our publications – EU GPSR

Schweizerbart and Borntraeger want to ensure the safety of their publications ("products") for consumers. Under consideration of the EU General Product Safety Regulation (GPSR), we ensure that all our publications meet the highest safety standards.

Product safety measures taken by our publishers

Risk assessment and documentation

We conduct a thorough internal risk assessement of each of our publications. This involves checking which risks emanate from the product and documenting this in a technical file. This documentation is kept for at least 10 years and is made available to relevant market surveillance authorities on request.

Safety-related properties and hazard analysis

Regular printed books without inserts or additional functions generally do not pose any risk to health or safety. This has always been the case since our publishing houses were founded (1790).

For this reason, our publications are exempt from the obligation to be provided with instructions and safety information under Article 9(7) of the GPSR Regulation.

In the case of publications that were published before this regulation came into force (13.12.2024) and do not have any special safety-related properties, i.e. "normal books", we also consider the risk to be low.
Should you have any questions about a specific title, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Transparency and traceability

Transparency and traceability of our publications are ensured by printing the publisher's address and, since that time, email address and website address in our publications. Books can be identified by their ISBN.
This means that it is always possible to trace which production a book originates from, so that we can react quickly and effectively if necessary.

Security information

According to Article 9, Section 7 of the EU GPSD , "normal" books without additives or special functions do not require any additional safety information, operating instructions or documentation.
If our publications contain additives that require special precautions, these are clearly and distinctly indicated.
