Special Issue: Practical Applications of the Age-Stage, Two-Sex Life Table in Ecological Research and Pest Management: Integrating Theory, Experiments, and Computer Simulations - Call for papers

The age-stage, two-sex life table provides a powerful framework for accurately describing stage differentiation, survival, and reproduction, while enabling the calculation of comprehensive population parameters. Because of these advantages, it has been widely adopted in entomological and ecological research.

In biological control programs, accurate estimation of the predation rate of predators and the parasitism rate of parasitoids is essential for determining the appropriate number of natural enemies for release. In pest control programs, understanding the damage or consumption rate of pests is necessary to set economic thresholds and optimize control timing. Since most insects and mites reproduce sexually and have age-stage structures, and because their susceptibility to pesticides varies with age, the two-sex life table provides a more precise tool for capturing these differences.

For example, sex pheromones may be effective against adult females or males, but if the pest causes damage primarily during the larval stage, life table analysis is indispensable for addressing such time-lag effects. Furthermore, linking life table analysis with predation, parasitism, and damage rates, as well as integrating these into computer simulations, represents a critical advancement for ecological modeling and pest management. The age-stage, two-sex life table, together with its associated software tools (TWOSEX, CONSUME, and TIMING) has become a promising approach for advancing pest management strategies.

We are pleased to announce a Special Issue of Entomologia Generalis, focusing on the practical application of the age-stage, two-sex life table in:

  • Pest management and biological control
  • Mass-rearing and utilization of natural enemies
  • Global warming and climate change impacts
  • Sustainable pest management in natural habitats, agricultural systems, and greenhouses
  • Other related applications
