Abstract
On the basis of the analysis of published records of representative, morphologically well defined marine blue-green algae it is shown that three major areas of distribution can be distinguished; these correspond to the (sub)- cosmopolitan, pantropical, and holarctic biogeographical divisions. It is hypothesized that temperature is one of the likely factors controlling the distribution of marine blue-green algae.
