Abstract
In order to gain a better understanding of the occurrence and distribution of desmids in Scotland, some 80 samples have been collected from many types of aquatic habitat which yielded a total of over 1350 taxa. For the most part this paper is based upon a selection of those desmids considered to be extremely rare, and because of that rarity is deserving of additional illustration and comment. A new variety of Cosmarium is reported, while many of the records are new either to Scotland or the British Isles.
