Abstract

Whereas by photosynthesis algae can fix CO, reduce nitrate, and synthesize essential amino-acids, animals lack these abilities. In studies of animals with symbiotic algae, although carbon metabolism has received much attention, nitrogen metabolism has been less studied. It is suggested that in such symbiotic systems more research should be concentrated on the latter, particularly pathways of the essential amino-acids.
