Abstract
Several Merismopedia-like forms have been observed, collected and cultivated from the microbial mats at Mellum and Norderney Islands (East-Frisian Islands, North Sea). On the basis of morphological, biochemical and ultrastructural studies they could be attributed to the species M. elegans Kützing 1848, M. glaucaNägeli 1849 and M. punctata Meyen 1839. All strains were examined for the ability of active movement. By long term observations a positive phototactic response (towards the direction of the incident light) was found. Furthermore, active movement of whole aggregates of Merismopedia punctata Meyen 1839, but no motility of single cells was observed and documented in the cultures.
