Abstract

During his travels in Swedish Lapland Linnaeus recorded two different Byssi aquaticae, nos. 529 and 532, published in Flora Lapponica (1737). These two taxa characterizations were later united under Byssus flos aquae in Species Plantarum and Flora Svecica. The taxon Aphanizomenon flos-aquae has eventually been attributed to Byssus flos aquae. The opinion of the Swedish phycologist, F. A. Wrangel (1826) that Linnaeus made a mistake in unifying the two taxa descriptions is discussed and supported. One of the originally described taxa (no. 532) could probably be attributed to Anabaena. This view is supported by observations made later by other travellers in Lapland and by an actual knowledge of the distribution pattern of mass-developing Anabaena within the country.
