Abstract

A series of measurements of N2O and other nitrogeneous components were made in two freshwater lakes of Japan, which are different in area, maximum depth and trophic level, in order to understand the detailed process of N2O production and consumption. Large N2O accumulations were repeatedly observed in the oxygen deficient layers in both lakes, concomitant with large NO2-accumulations. Although nitrification was suggested to contribute to both the accumulations to some extent, denitrification was considered to be more responsible. In Lake Kizaki, a relationship was found between the behavior of the nitrogen oxides (NO3-, NO2- and N2O) and the oxygen concentration: (1) below about 0.4 ml·liter-1, NO3- consumption and both N2O an NO2- accumulations started. (2) above 0 to about 0.1 ml . liter-1 N2O and NO2-accumulations were maximal and the oxygen consumption appeared to be greatly diminished.
