Abstract

Cyanobacterial mats were found at three of Britain's four thermal springs exposed to light. The mats were most extensive and species-rich at Bath Spa, where seven species of cyanobacteria were found including Fischerella (Mastigocladus) laminosus, which had not previously been recorded from the British Isles. All mats predominantly comprised Phormidium species. Laboratory studies of 14CO2 uptake vs. temperature showed that mats of P. luridum from Bath and P. ambiguum from Matlock Bath had temperature optima of 30 and 40 °C respectively, but would not grow above 47 °C.
