Abstract

Stages of purification of Rhine water in tanks linked in series are described. Many species come in with the river water. At a certain distance from the inlet, a mass development of organisms takes place in the longest basin. Further on there is a decline. The basin farthest from the inlet is characterised by a variety of organisms which are not found in the Rhine. By considering the whole complex, it can be shown that, depending on the distance and velocity of the water, a biological self-purification takes place which manifests itself in its chemical composition as well as in its organism populations.
