Abstract
Pericarp structure has been investigated in 10 out of the c. 20 species of the genus Monarda in Lamiaceae subfamily Nepetoideae tribe Mentheae subtribe Menthinae. Old data showing that the pericarp structure of Monarda is extremely variable and partly matches the pericarp of the genus Salvia (in subtribe Salviinae) is found to be incorrect. Instead, the structure shows only little variation, and strongly resembles that of Blephilia and other genera of Menthinae. The finding removes all uncertainties about the subtribal position of Monarda.
