Abstract
Descriptions and identification tables (as well as illustrations of taxonomically important anatomical characteristics) are given for 37 currently known species of the 11 genera of the lacewing subfamily Crocinae. Of these, 5 Dielocroce species from the Near East are described as being new: D. maxima n. sp. (Iran), D. vartianae n. sp. (Iran), D. modesta n. sp. (Iran), D. kabulensis n. sp. (Afghanistan), and D. hebraea n. sp. (Israel). New synonyms are stated for 3 genera: Berlandus Pierre 1952 (nov. syn. to Dielocroce Cowley 1941), Klugina Navas 1910 and Walthornia Navas 1927 (both nov. syn. to Croce McLachlan 1885), as well as 11 species: Josandreva lioptera Navas 1926, Croce braueri Navas 1910, C. zarudnyi Alexandrov-Martynov 1930, C. klugi Navas 1932, C. ougartae Pierre 1952, Nina withycombei Navas 1926, Dielocroce afghana Hölzel 1968, Pterocroce toreyi Withycombe 1923, P. troglophilus Pierre 1952, Berlandus saharae Pierre 1952. One species, Nemoptera (= Dielocroce) alba Oliver 1811 from Baghdad, remains a nomen dubium. A number of species are transferred as nov. comb, to other genera. The numerous members of the genus Dielocroce/i>, along with the closely related Afghanocroce -, Pterocroce- and Anacroce-species inhabit a band of desert zones on the south border of the Palaearctis, thus forming the main distribution area of Crocinae in the northern hemisphere. In the southern hemisphere, three population centers of some closely related genera are distinguishable in South America, South Africa, and Australia. In general, Crocinae species can be considered inhabitants of arid zones.
