Abstract

Artificial parthenogenesis has been successfully induced in the unfertilized eggs of a sawfly, Athalia lugens proxima (Klug 1815), with the help of different concentrations of various chemicals, both organic and inorganic in nature. Keeping in view the different theories put forward regarding the mechanism of induction of artificial parthenogenesis in different insect species, a new proposition of osmotic shock accompanied with a minor shift in the pH has been proposed.
