Abstract

Occurrence of carrion inhabiting rove beetles is determined by biotop and season. No pattern of succession in the rove beetle community is found. Niche overlap for time and space and differences in food, size and succession indicates for only 3% off all species-combinations no segregation. No segregation only in small species (Atheta spp. ) occured. Niche breadth for time and space is similar in forest- and field samples. There is some correlation between niche breadth and number of inhabited samples but no correlation exists between niche breadth and relative abundance. The forest samples are characterised by a large number of small species where there is a correlation between niche breadth and size of species. The field samples are inhabited mainly by a small number of large species (i. e. Philonthus, Creophilus). The samples of the ecotone field-forest lay in between in respect of number and size of species.
