Abstract

The susceptibility of L. redekei (formerly Osicllatoria) to lysis and nitrogen deficiency is shown. Lysis, with release of cell contents, intensified under Cinorg-, N- or P-deficiency. The interaction between bacteria and L. redekei supports algal growth with organic N-compounds which are hardly metabolized by axenic algae. — Distribution, area and characteristics of lakes with L. redekei blooms is presented. L. redekei populations were studied in the Eastholstein Edebergsee for 5 years. Dynamics of physical, chemical and biological variables are given. Population dynamics, the duration of the growth period from September to June and the occurrence of epi- and meta/hypolimnetic maxima are discussed with respect to algal properties and adaptability of photosynthetic behaviour.
