Fresh water ice nuclei

Abstract

A transect of surface water samples, from the source of the River Gwaun to 8 km out into the Irish Sea, was analysed for ice nucleating particles (INP). The river samples contained up to 1570 INP mL –1 active above –10 ° C. The INP concentration dropped as salinity increased and marine samples had many fewer but still detectable INP (< 1 mL –1). Up to 68 % of the freshwater INP passed through a 0.22 μm filter. Since bubble bursting release of particles is likely to occur from rivers, and these particles are likely to become airborne the extent of INP in river sources requires evaluation.
