Abstract

Icmadophila ericetorum 53 specimens from Europe were studied. All samples contained thamnolic acid (with decarboxythamnolic acid) and perlatolic acid. Thamnolic acid is localized both in the apothecium and in the thallus; the occurrence of perlatolic acid is restriced to the thallus. Parmelia stygia 131 European specimens were tested. Three chemotypes were found: chemotype 0 ("no lichen compounds”) (13 samples); chemotype 1 (fumarprotocetraric acid and protocetraric acid) (107 samples); chemotype 2 (caperatic acid) (11 samples). All specimens were tested by means of thin layer chromatography. The identity of perlatolic acid was confirmed by UV spectral photometry and by microhydrolysis.
