Abstract

169 specimens - mostly from Central Europe, Norway and Sweden - were studied. On the whole, the following main compounds were found (not necessarily in great amounts always): usnic acid, divaricatic acid, hypothamnolic acid, thamnolic acid and psoromic acid. Thamnolic acid is in most cases accompanied by decarboxythamnolic acid. Traces of two accessory substances of divaricatic acid were identified tentatively as stenosporic acid and 4-0-demethyldivaricatic acid. - In addition lipophilic substances were found in many specimens but were not analyzed as well as the red pigment of the apothecia, - Barbatic acid and zeorine which had been reported as components of chemotypes of this group could not be detected in the material. - The known K + violet reaction of the thallus of H. lapponicum var. violascens is caused by hypothamnolic acid.
