Abstract
The aquatic bryophyte flora has been studied in 20 streams on granite and red sandstone in the Vosges Mountains, France. The floristic composition was compared with ecological parameters such as conductivity, pH, width, depth and flow of the water as well as water chemistry data. No correlation was found between floristic composition and the results of the analysis of the water chemistry (Al, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, Na, Pb) which are very homogneous in all streams studied. The floristic composition of aquatic bryophytes seems mainly be influenced by the pH of the water, which ranges between 4.0 and 7.3. The aquatic bryophyte vegetation can roughly be classified in three groups, acidic streams with Scapania undulata and Marsupella emarginata, subneutrophilous streams with dominating Thamnobryum alopecurum, Brachythecium rivulare and Platyhypnidium rusciforme, and weakly basic streams with Fontinalis squamosa, Fissidens crassipes and Schistidium rivulare
