Abstract

In juvenile riverine fish, needs and capabilities change with increasing body size. At the same time, their environment changes in a predictable (e. g. day-night alternance) or unpredictable (e. g. discharge) manner. As a consequence their first year of life is generally characterized by a succession of habitat shifts that occur at different spatial and temporal scales. This paper focuses on habitat shifts at a reduced scale of space. Some descriptive studies on juvenile riverine fishes are presented, some of the different mechanisms which may explain these habitat shifts are considered, and their potential role for growth or survival is discussed.
