Abstract
We are very grateful to the METEOROLOGISCHE ZEITSCHRIFT for having the opportunity to present a special issue on the POLLUMET project. The papers found herein are based on contributions presented at an open POLLUMET workshop in Basel in October 1992. The acronym POLLUMET stands for pollution and meteorology, a Swiss research project in which the formation and transport of photooxidants over the Swiss Plateau and in adjacent pre-Alpine valleys are investigated. The project relies on field studies peformed during summers (campaigns took place in summer 1990 and 1991, a third one is planned for summer 1993) and related numerical modeling studies. Aircraft observations made on several consecutive days give a three-dimensional picture of the most important chemical and physical variables during morning and evening hours over large parts of the Swiss Plateau. Additionally, numerous ground and balloon based measurements of both chemical and physical properties of the atmosphere are performed.
