Constructional morphology of ammonite septa

Bayer, Ulf

Abstract

The advantage of mathematical descriptions is that all boundary conditions have to be well defined. In the case of ammonite septa they enable us to analyze the basic conditions necessary to generate the septal surface and to compare the resulting form with actual, biologically grown septa. The comparison with analogous models (Seilacher, 1975) has opened a new approch to these complex structures. The next step was to develop a formal mathematical model of the septal surface, basically followed the ‘pneu-model’.
