Abstract
For a long time longitudinal canals in the shell wall of Caprinidae, so-called palliai canals, have been known (Douvillé 1888, 1904). Transverse sections often show very complicated canal patterns which are used by paleontologists for taxonomic purposes. Up to now there is no serious attempt at revealing the function of these remarkable structures (Dechaseaux 1952). Parallel evolution in several lines in Middle America as well as in the Mediterranean area from simple undivided or bifurcating canal walls to multiple polyfurcating plates confirm their highly adaptive nature (Coogan 1969).
