Abstract
In a joint project the relationship of marine “lebensraum” (its tectonic origin and basic change, its shifting ecology) and biota during the geosynclinal development of the paleozoic Cantabrian Mountains (Northern Spain) has been investigated. The aim of the research is a paleoecological model of a geosyncline from its beginning till orogenesis. The transition from the geosynclinal phase to the orogenic phase took place from Givetian/Frasnian times to later Namurian times. As in most phanerozoic orogens an interval of general levelling with widely monotonous facies conditions can be recognized. Since lower Namurian until Stephanian times sedimentation accumulated under active tectonic conditions with increasing intensity. The Cantabrian orogen is of intracratonic type.
