Abstract
The investigations of the shell growth of ammonoids carried out since 1969 opened the possibility to characterize in a detailed manner the ontogenetic development of the shell growth by means of allometric calculations. The differences of the ammonoid shells can be explained as changes of proportions of the basic growth parameters. This can be recognized as changes of the allometric constants. By means of calculations of the allometry characters, it is possible to determine the qualitative shell characteristics as well as to determine the change of the shell types during time. A systematic survey already shows, that certain shell types were formed only at certain times, and therefore were missing in other times.
