Abstract
The interrelationships between sediments, sedimentological features and paleocommunities as well as the constructional morphology of indicative faunal elements are the keys to investigate the history and the sedimentary processes of a basin. The number of data increases rapidly if the different fields of sedimentology and paleontology are summarized within a basin analysis; they may become excessively numerous even in a limited micropaleontological study or in biological experiments with large numbers of specimens. Therefore statistical analysis by computer became a widespread tool in paleoecology. Mainly two aspects of paleoecological data handling encouraged us to develop a special data-handling-system in the SFB 53.
