Abstract
Science is international. In particular the geological sciences have attained great success through international and interdisciplinary, projectrelated cooperation. For example, the "International Geodynamics Project" offered Iranian and German geoscientists, who for the most part had already worked together on the problems of Iranian Geology, the opportunity to realize a mutual research project. First agreements were made in September 1973 on the occasion of the "Tehran Symposium on the Geodynamics of South West Asia". The following year a delegation of the German Research Society (DFG) travelled to Tehran in order to specify the goals of the project in a "Letter of Understanding", together with the Geological Survey of Iran and the National Iranian Geodynamics Committee. An Iranian-German "Joint Coordination Committee" was appointed with 5 Iranian and 5 German members in order to coordinate the scientific activities. This committee was supposed to meet once a year in Iran or Germany, in order to determine the work program for the following year. Although a German-Iranian cooperation provided the basis for the program, scientists of other countries were also welcome to participate. In particular a French group also participated in an investigation of the ophiolites.
