Abstract
The Binalud mountains (NE-Iran) are located marginally to the Turan plate and to the Iran plate, displaying sensitively their geologic-tectonic development. Within a sector north of the master fault of Sangbast-Shandiz in the Mashhad-area, the types of intermediate-level folding and metamorphism, together with acid plutonism indicate a similar geologic history to that of the southern margin of the Turan plate during Paleozoic time. The main part of the area, on the contrary, suffered only weak deformation during Late Variscan-Early Kimmerian time. Folding and low-grade metamorphism during the Middle Jurassic formed an extended slate belt and partially imbrication structures at its southern end, unconformably covered by post-Middle Jurassic marine sediments. A second event during the Alpidian orogenic episode led to gently folded, in part strongly inclined folds of a décollement type, accompanied by volanic activity.
