Abstract

The papers comprised by this volume have been written by geologists, or teams of geologists, working in various Sudetic units and now attempting to summarize our present knowledge of geology of these areas. Because of the limited space the volume is concerned only with the West Sudetes. However, it is hoped that in not too distant future there will be another opportunity to present similar accounts dealing with the East Sudetes and the Foresudetic Block. There is little doubt that the Sudetes are one of the key regions for any interpretation of the European Variscides. Unfortunately many fundamentic facts of the West Sudetes geology, especially those obtained more recently, are rather poorly known to the international audience. Thus, it is hoped that this volume pooling much of our latest knowledge will to some extent fill the gap. We are perfectly aware of an unfortunate lack of systematic geochemical and isotopic analyses, in particular radiometric age determinations. Those performed occasionaly in western laboratories are too scarce and often vaguely related to important details of the complex local geology. Therefore the papers embraced in this volume try to present as many factual data as possible in such a concise manner, without attempting at the moment constructions of any geodynamic model, hence leaving the large-scale interpretations to the reader according to his taste and preferences.
