Abstract
Ilymatogyra africana (Lamarck) is a common exogyrine oyster which inhabited Tethyan near-shore water in the Mediterranean Province during Upper Cenomanian time. Continuous variation within a large population confirms that we deal with a single species. By defining general size and shape vectors in ten morphometric characters, by the principal component analysis, variation in the population was explained as differences in shell geometries throughout growth. Specimens previously referred to as Rhynchostreon suborbiculatum (Lamarck) probably belong to the analyzed species.
