Abstract
The notion of adaptation is mired in a general failure to clarify the extent to which alterations arise from the nature of available variation or from the sequential moulding of individually insignificant alternatives by selection. The classic problem of the adaptive significance of torsion is considered in this context. Arguments are presented that adaptation results in this case and, by implication, in others as an incidental by-product of constraints defined by 'constructional morphology'.
Kurzfassung
Das Konzept der Anpassung ist mit der generellen Schwierigkeit behaftet, aufzuklären, in welchem Ausmaß Änderungen durch die Gegebenheiten vorhandener Variation oder durch schrittweises Ausformen individuell unbedeutender Alternativen via Selektion entstehen. In diesem Zusammenhang wird das klassische Problem der adaptiven Bedeutung der Torsion betrachtet. Es wird die Möglichkeit diskutiert, daß Anpassung in diesem und mutmaßlich auch in anderen Fällen als zufälliges Nebenprodukt konstruktionsmorphologischer Zwänge entsteht.
