Abstract
Facies and biostratigraphy of the Paleogene sediments of 5 localities on Masirah Island (Sultanate of Oman) were studied. Nummulites and other benthic foraminiferas allow for age determination of the lithostratigraphic units and thus for a detailed reconstruction of the Paleogene sedimentary history of Masirah Island in a regional context: During the Late Cretaceous to the Paleocene laterites were formed. From the Early to Middle Lutetian and also in the Early Oligocene marine carbonates in a protected shelf environment were deposited, probably coupled with two major eustatic sea level rises.
Kurzfassung
Die paläogenen Sedimente von 5 Lokalitäten auf der Insel Masirah (Sultanat von Oman) wurden faziell und biostratigraphisch ausgewertet. Anhand der benthischen Foraminiferen (u. a. Nummuliten) konnten die lithostratigraphischen Einheiten datiert und die paleogene Ablagerungsgeschichte von Masirah in einem regionalen Zusammenhang detailliert rekonstruiert werden: Ab Ende Kreide bis ins Paleozän erfolgten Lateritbildungen. Im frühen bis mittleren Lutetian und im frühen Oligozän wurden, vermutlich gekoppelt mit zwei eustatischen Meeresspiegelanstiegen, marine Flachwassersedimente gebildet.
