Abstract
Several spheroid types have been recognised within Early Devonian slates (Moselschiefer) in the Glückauf mine near Mayen, Germany. They exhibit different morphological and textural features and they occur in association with both framboidal and euhedral pyrite. Comparison with spheroids from other pyrite-bearing sediments indicates that the spheroids from this study are most likely pyrite spherules. However, there remains a subset of spheroids, which cannot be attributed to pyrite formation, but may be related to the presence of particular microfossils.
