Abstract

The fossil Antrimpos Münster, 1839 has been considered a “basket genus” for penaeid shrimps that do not fit the morphological characters of Penaeus Fabricius, 1798. Recently, Odin et al. (2019) provided a diagnosis for the genus, pointing out its main morphological characters. The purpose of this contribution is an updated reappraisal of the species previously assigned to Antrimpos, focused mainly on their diagnostic rostral and carapace distinctive features. As a result, four species are herein considered valid within Antrimpos. Antrimpos noricus Pinna, 1974 (Late Triassic, Italy), recently reassigned to Acanthochirana Strand, 1928, is redescribed and discussed based on the type series and additional specimens, and is therefore maintained in its original combination. The three species from the Late Jurassic of Germany, Antrimpos nonodon Münster, 1839, A. speciosus Münster, 1839 and A. undenarius Schweigert, 2001, are also considered as valid species of Antrimpos. Moreover, Gladiocaris n. gen. is erected to accommodate Antrimpos germanicus Brandt & Schulz, 2013 (Middle Triassic, Germany) based on its elongate, smooth rostrum. Antrimpos colettoi Garassino, Schweigert & Muscio, 2014 (Late Triassic, Italy) is assigned to Ladinicaris Pasini, Garassino, Stockar & Magnani, 2022, based on the shape of the rostrum bearing one single ventral tooth. Antrimpos atavus (Bill, 1914) (Middle Triassic, France and Germany) is considered as a doubtful penaeid shrimp (Penaeidae) and left in open nomenclature though it was recently placed in Anisaeger Schweitzer et al., 2014 (Aegeridae). Similarly, Genus? crassipes Bronn, 1858 (Late Triassic, Italy) is maintained as a doubtful penaeid shrimp (Penaeidae) and left in open nomenclature though it was recently placed in Anisaeger by Smith et al. (2022). Finally, A. juvavensis Van Straelen, 1940 (Late Triassic, Austria), A. liasicus (Oppel, 1862) (Early Jurassic, Switzerland), and A. sharpi (Woodward, 1868) (Early Jurassic, England), all based on poorly preserved specimens, are herein considered as nomina dubia.
