Abstract

The content, distribution, palaeobiogeography, evolution and classification of the trigoniid bivalve subfamily Syrotrigoniinae are assessed. The group first appeared in the late Early Tithonian of the European Province from a rutitrigoniine antecedent, and attained its greatest diversity in the Neocomian of the Andean Province. It extended its range into the Middle East and East Africa during the Late Barremian, with the last representatives recorded from the Santonian–Maastrichtian of India. The subfamly is removed from Buchotrigoniidae and transferred to Rutitrigoniidae. Consequent to phylogenetic analysis ten genera are recognized, five of which are new.
