Kurzfassung
Anzahl und Anordnung der Foramina des Exoccipitale, die vermutlich den Verlauf des Nervus hypoglossus des Ichthyosauriers Ophthalmosaurus aus dem Mittleren Jura von England bezeichnen, sind bemerkenswert variabel, sogar beim selben Individuum. Diese osteologische Besonderheit zeigt, daß jene Merkmale für alphataxionomische und phylogenetische Studien an Ichthyosauriern nur mit Vorsicht verwendet werden können. Das vorderste Exoccipitalforamen einiger Ichthyosaurier, das generell als Foramen nervi accessorii gedeutet wird, wird als separate Öffnung des vordersten Hypoglossus-Astes interpretiert.
Abstract
The number and pattern of exoccipital foramina supposedly marking the course of the hypoglossal nerve in the Middle Jurassic ichthyosaur Ophthalmosaurus from England show considerable variation, even within one individual. This osteological peculiarity demonstrates, that these characters can only be cautiously used for alphataxionomical or phylogenetic studies in ichthyosaurs. The anteriormost exoccipital foramen of some ichthyosaurs, usually regarded as foramen nervi accessorii is re-interpreted as a separate opening for the first hypoglossal branch.
