Abstract
Disarticulated remains of the jaw and the skull roof as well as vertebrae of the lizard Eolacerta from the Eocene locality of Prémontré, France, show several features that were previously only poorly known, such as the detailed morphology of the ventral side of the parietal or the structure of the zygosphene. A comparison with other lizards shows that Eolacerta unites features of different groups, supporting the view that this form is a basal scleroglossan representative.
Kurzfassung
Disartikulierte Elemente des Kiefers, des Schädeldachs sowie Wirbel der Eidechse Eolacerta aus der eozänen Fundstelle Prémontré, Frankreich, zeigen einige bisher unbekannte Merkmale, wie z. B. die Morphologie der Ventralseite des Parietales oder die Struktur des Zygosphens. Verglichen mit anderen Eidechsen weist Eolacerta die Merkmale unterschiedlicher Verwandtschaftsgruppen auf, so dass eine genaue Zuordnung weiterhin unklar bleibt. Dies bestärkt die Ansicht, dass Eolacerta ein basaler Vertreter der Scleroglossa ist.
Résumé
Des restes de mandibules, de crâne et de vertèbres du lézard Eolacerta sont décrits dans l’Eocène inférieur de Prémontré, France. Le nouveau matériel montre plusieurs caractères qui n’ont pu être reconnus jusqu’à présent, comme par exemple la morphologie de la face ventrale du pariétal ou la structure du zygosphène vertébral. Comparé aux autres lézards, Eolacerta réunit des caractères présents dans des taxons séparés. Cela renforce la conviction que Eolacerta est un représentant primitif de Scleroglossa.
