A mastodont (Mammalia, Gomphotheriidae) from the Argentinian continental shelf

Abstract
The first terrestrial mammal remain from the present South American continental shelf is described. The fossil, a right partial jaw with m3 and part of m2, is assigned to the mastodont species Stegomastodon waringi (Mammalia, Proboscidea) and comes from the middle part of the shelf at the latitude of the Provincia de Buenos Aires (central Argentina). The material appears to be Lujanian in age (latest Pleistocene-earliest Holocene). This is the first published record of S. waringi in the area. The record demonstrates that the middle shelf area was dry land when the animal inhabited it, the climate was suitable for it at this moment, and there was an adequate plant supply in the area.
Kurzfassung
Der erste Nachweis eines Landwirbeltiers vom heutigen südamerikanischen Kontinentalschelf wird beschrieben. Das Fossil, ein rechter Teilkiefer mit dem m3 und einem Teil des m2 wird zur Mastodonten-Art Stegomastodon waringi (Mammalia, Proboscidea) gestellt. Es kommt vom mittleren Teil des Schelfs auf der Breite der Provincia de Buenos Aires (Mittel-Argentinien). Das Material scheint ein Lujanian-Alter (spätestes Pleistozän - frühestes Holozän) zu besitzen. Es stellt den ersten publizierten Nachweis von S. waringi aus dieser Region dar und belegt damit, dass der mittlere Schelf zu jener Zeit Festland war, und Klima und Angebot an Nahrungspflanzen für dieses Tier günstig waren.
