Abstract
The element thallium is better known for the high toxicity than for the few special applications which it has found in industry so far. It has attracted the interest of many scientists who compiled a lot of knowledge about the chemistry and physical properties of this metal and its compounds. With the chance of a more widespread application in the production of thallium-containing high temperature super-conducting materials it should be kept in mind that the careless handling of thallium or thallium compounds or the improper processing of thallium-containing raw materials may cause severe poisoning of the individual or pollution of the environment.
